What You Should Do

Water Loss:

Note: Do NOT use electrical circuits or fixtures that are or may be wet!

Pipe Burst or Pipe Leak

  • If there is a pipe burst or an active leak, SHUT OFF MAIN WATER VALVE. A lever valve handle should be turned so it is perpendicular to the pipe. A spinning valve handle should be turned counter clockwise until it is snug.
    • City Water: The valve will be located on a pipe that’s connected to your water meter. The water meter is usually in your basement utility area or in a utility closet.
    • Well Water: The valve will be located on a pipe coming out of the floor next to your pressure tank. This is all usually located in the basement. Call a reputable plumber to repair the burst or leak. If you do not know a reputable plumber, call us and we will call reputable plumber for you.

  • Remove as much ice and snow from your roof as possible. If you cannot do the work yourself, roofing companies will often have people available to do the work. BE PREPARED. Roofing companies often use axes to break up an ice dam.
  • Drain the water from ceilings or walls. Attempt to create an easy path for the water to flow into a bucket. Try to divert the water by poking a hole in the ceiling or wall.
